ESCP: Domestic Abuse - Understanding , Engagement and Assessment

PLEASE NOTE THIS TRAINING WILL RUN OVER TWO SESSIONS ON MON 15TH & TUE 16TH NOVEMBER. YOU MUST ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS. 

Understandings of domestic violence - what is it, why do people use violence in intimate relationships and the effect of that violence on partners and children. Recognition, assessment and response - spotting the signs of domestic violence, risk assessment, early engagement with parents, and collaborative working to maximise safety. 
Training objectives What is it

Looking at a broad definition that goes beyond actual physical violence, including coercive control
financial control, isolation, sexual violence, so-called honour based violence etc.
Why domestic violence and abuse is different to what is addressed in anger management or couples counselling
 

Why do people use violence in intimate relationships

Using an extract from the film Nil By Mouth that neatly illustrates the different factors that enable a person  to choose to brutalise the people closest. These include ideas learnt from peers and wider culture from about gender, family templates, social collusion, thoughts, feelings, beliefs systems, deception of self and others and ultimately the  intention to gain power and control
 

The effect of that violence on partners and children. 

Building on the impact of the film clip, which shows the impact all too clearly, looking at understanding this impact in an empathic way.
Looking with understanding at why a partner may stay, return to a relationship, retract allegations and exploring the dangers of victim blaming.
 

Recognition, assessment and response –  spotting the signs of domestic violence,

Tell-tale signs to look out for
The limitations of trying to spot signs and the need to take allegations seriously
Personal disclosure exercise: in pairs, participants disclose a time they were abusive in a relationship. In the debrief we look at how they told the story- deflections, excuses, information let out etc. to understand how difficult it is for perpetrators to disclose and their strategies of evasion.
Following on from the disclosure exercise, explain how perpetrators may present (minimising, denying, blaming etc.), illustrated by role plays
 

Risk assessment,

Why it is crucial to use risk assessment rather than personal judgement
Using a mock case study to identify what are static, dynamic and vulnerability factors
An over view of key risk assessment tools
A word of caution about the limitations of risk assessment (e.g. risk is dynamic and must be constantly assessed, it is only as accurate as the information available)
 

Early engagement with parents,

The challenges you may face – if possible, using people’s own experiences of trying to engage parents
Techniques of asking questions that are both non-combative but non-collusive, including how to phrase questions and the benefits of motivational interviewing
Using role plays to develop participants’ practical skills. The facilitator plays a perpetrator and participants can try out different questioning strategies.
 

Collaborative working to maximise safety.

The importance of a collaborative, community response to DVA,
The public vs the private face. How perpetrators manipulate the flow of information and why it is essential to conflict by systematically sharing and sharing information and suspicions
Who to talk to, including MARAC
